Some Space Above Us (Original, Signed and Framed)

'Colour is joyful, and yes, I want my paintings to be joyful too.' 

I recently attended a rather beautiful immersive art experience at the Lightroom in London, David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away).

During the narration spoken by Hockney himself, he said the words quoted above, underpinned by gorgeous, stirring music, whilst this incredible and huge boxy room somehow projected such vivid and colourful reproductions of his work.  

The words, so simple, so sincerely spoken.  The music so emotive and the brilliance and uniqueness of the visual experience stirred my own emotions. I can honestly say, without any overplaying it, I felt it in my heart, a swelling that tickled through me, like a counterpoint to worry or anxiety, a brief swell, like a soft good wave that brought tears to my eyes. 

I suppose I realised at that moment, I feel exactly the same.  The difference is that spoken from the lips of an artist who is revered, celebrated, and very successful it feels so weighted and valid.  Yet when I say the same kind of thing about my own work I feel a bit silly.  Like I've got nothing more worthy to say. 

But that's the thing.  Painting for me is about creating a space that holds nothing more than my own attempt to place the feeling I felt, described above, which I suppose is akin to joyfulness - and a response to all the beauty and colour that exists in this amazing natural world around us. To put that onto paper somehow.

And just occasionally, that simple evocation, transmitted like a radio signal waiting to be received, can be felt by others when they look at my paintings (and this can only really happen when people make the time to visit my studio and gallery). 

That connection is why I'll try and continue to do this, at least until my art is inside a mega immersive super box and my words make others feel good, uplifted, heartily moved and reassured, even if just momentarily.  Because that is the power of art. 

Keep looking ahead and keep looking up.  

It really is some space above us.
