Hello, I’m Mattwatercolours.

Well, actually that’s not true, I’m Matt Brown, a name that, interestingly, also denotes paint, a brown paint with a matte finish I suppose. Not ideal. Anyway…

After departing | escaping the corporate sector working in London, I am now a full time, professional artist.

I’m driven by feeling subjects, landscapes and places rather than depicting a photo-like replication. For me, much of appreciation of visual art is derived from colour.  The beauty of an original painting is how light, be that natural or otherwise, brings all the pigments to life, watercolour paint has a wonderful, joyful depth and vibrancy, which no other medium can produce in my view.

So, as the name suggests, much of my work is rooted in a base of watercolour.

Interestingly the majority of artists I love, the Impressionists - Edgar Degas, Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, then the later Post Impressionists - Matisse, Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Mondrain, Kandinsky, Macke, Schiele and later artists like LS Lowry and David Hockney are oil paint artists.

So in that respect I feel I am trying something different in bringing that kind of expression to watercolour painting.

Since being unable to exhibit in galleries in 2020 I have brought everything in house (literally) and online. I have also developed an organic clothing collection, along with other accessories, which I hope you will enjoy exploring.

I run a pop up gallery on Hove Promenade and welcome appointments to view my portfolio. I’d be delighted to hear from you.
