Hello, I’m Mattwatercolours.
Well, actually that’s not true, I’m Matt Brown, a name that, interestingly, also denotes paint, a brown paint with a matte finish I suppose. Not ideal. Anyway…
I’m an artist who loves watercolour paints and discovering new ways to play with the medium. I’m driven by feeling subjects, landscapes and places rather than depicting a photo-like replication. I am unable to paint that way. For me, much of my joy in appreciating visual art and in developing my own style is derived from colour, therefore my chosen medium is predominantly watercolour. The beauty of an original painting is how light, be that natural or otherwise, brings all the pigments to life, the colour has a wonderful depth and vibrancy, which no other medium can produce in my view.
Interestingly the majority of artists I love, the Impressionists - Edgar Degas, Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, then the later Post Impressionists - Matisse, Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Mondrain, Kandinsky, Macke, Schiele and later artists like LS Lowry and David Hockney are oil paint artists. So in that respect I feel I am trying something different in bringing that kind of expression to watercolour painting.
Since being unable to exhibit in galleries in 2020 I have brought everything in house (literally) and online. I have also developed an organic clothing collection, along with other accessories, which I hope you will enjoy exploring.
I run a pop up gallery from my home in Brighton and Hove, and in recent times I can often be found showing off my work on Hove Promenade. I welcome appointments to view my portfolio with the appropriate distance measures in place.
I’d be delighted to hear from you, all details are on my contact page.
