about

Hello, I’m Mattwatercolours.

Well, actually that’s not true, I’m Matt Brown, a name that, interestingly, also denotes paint, a brown paint with a matte finish I suppose. Not ideal. Anyway…

After departing the corporate sector working in London for 17 years, I am now a full time, professional artist - returning to the field I studied at university.

I’m driven by feeling subjects, landscapes and places rather than depicting a photo-like replication. For me, much of my own appreciation of visual art is derived from my reaction to colour and place. The beauty of any original painting is how light, be that natural or otherwise, brings all the pigments to life.  There is something unexplainable in how that can make me feel connected to the work and moved in some way.

My hope is that my work stimulates something positive and gentle in the viewer, reviving a memory perhaps of a place or time.

Primarily as the name infers...watercolour paint is my primary medium, though I do use oils, inks and gouache paints as well.  The combination has a wonderful, joyful depth and vibrancy in my view.

I love the Impressionists - Edgar Degas, Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, then the later Post Impressionists - Matisse, Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Mondrain, Kandinsky, Macke, Schiele and later artists like LS Lowry and David Hockney.  Abstract Expressionist painters like Ivon Hitchens, Emil Nolde and Paul Klee also influence my style.

I have my own gallery based in Brighton and Hove, for which I take bookings - I'd be delighted to find out more about you and your interest in art in gerenal.
