There are times when I paint something without any visual reference, where the inspiration comes entirely from somewhere inside me.  I suppose there are influences all jumbled up; painters I love, styles I like, colours I enjoy playing with, but still - therein lies a kind of purity. 

In essence it's a truer original and the weird thing is that when I painted this, there were moments I genuinely wasn't thinking, about anything - in a way I was very clearheaded and meditative perhaps.  At times it was as if the paintbrush was dancing across the paper of its own accord, as if control had been handed over. 

Oscar Wilde said: 'The good we get from art is not what we learn from it; it is what we become through it.'

I don't know if he is referring to all forms of art.  I don't know if he is referring to the experience of the viewer or the artist but there is hint of the transcendental in what he says. I find it appealing.

I cannot explain where this painting I've produced came from.  I had a vague notion in mind of making it feel like night time, more specifically of the quiet stillness of night, and that was it. I couldn't picture the end result, it just happened. 

I don't want to get too philosophical or spiritual but what is actually happening?

I am fascinated by the possibility that a tiny bit of magic exists inside the process of making art, of any kind.  I'd like to believe there is something unexplainable travelling from inside me into the painting. 

From soul to brushstroke what do I 'become'?

Who knows? Maybe a hint of happiness and my hope is that this flows from the painting and nurtures contentment in others.
