When travelling we are in the middle of leaving and arriving. I find this a very interesting, transient state, one for me personally, that is both comforting and exciting. The inspiration for this work came initially from a photograph taken by my brother Chris, whilst he was travelling by car through Estonia. However as I planned the painting, like any journey - small or large, literal or figurative, I wondered into somewhere new.
I began to think to the road behind as well as the one ahead, the distanced travelled sitting in cars with others particularly; brothers, friends, parents and girlfriends - windows down, sunlight, laughter, music blaring through some amazing landscapes. Sharing that small space with people I love and care about and going somewhere with that wonderful sense of anticipation. With this in mind the road flies away in to the distance, but if you look very closely there is a single small car making its way towards us, in this I am trying to entwine both the future and the past.
When we travel we are on an adventure, always - and whilst there are many cloying platitudes about 'life' being a journey, in the main they are all true - so try and enjoy it when you can and notice the things and people that matter. This painting is for everyone I've travelled with, particularly my brother Chris.
